At the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the Heads of State reaffirmed that promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production is one of the three overarching objectives of, and essential requirements for sustainable development.
A document was created which provides the vision, goals and values of the 10YFP as well as its functions, organisational structure, means of implementation, criteria for programmes design and an initial, non-exhaustive list of five programmes.

This document should be taken into account in policies and decisions that lead to the development of responsible tourism by governments, private sector, consumers,etc.
